Sunday the 8th of February was the day that the YMCA team headed 140 kms southeast of Melbourne on a journey to the land of Inverloch. And what a land it was, cruisey coastal vibes, fresh sea air and a whole bunch of gnar at stop two of the Gippsland regional skate park series
Rumor has it that the skate park was constructed by prisoners, well damn those prisoners had a good imagination. No kidding there was a vert ramp that was not even 3 ft in height. It was way too impressive to see the scooter crew throw down backflip to fakies on such a steep and sketchy ramp.
For the sake of humanity these scooter kids need to stop before they rip a hole in the upholstery of space-time. With the spins and flips they do, I have no doubt they will tail whip up a black hole and swallow the entire solar system. Both the young guns and the scooter veterans held a strong presence and killed a skate park that I had presumed was otherwise unscaleable.
Skate division held the largest presence out of all the divisions, with a mad turn out from both local dudes and the one eyed VSL followers. Under 12’s & 16’s proved to both the judges and the Inverloch community that skateboarding youth is alive and thriving. Amelia Hitchcock smashed a ‘PHAT’ line in her run and put on a sweet demo for the crowd. It was great to see her developing an awesome style and a sweet bag of tricks.
The day ended with open males blasting tricks on the sketchy transition left right and center. From ‘Rad dad’ Craig Mitchell to ‘Tip Rat’ Siaosi Lay-Blake, open skate was full of crazy characters and downright hammers. Big thanks to Vortex skate shop for supporting the local dudes down at the park and thanks to Fybian and Trav from the Inverloch YMCA for making the day run smoothly.
